How to Get Your First 10 Google Reviews (Without Breaking Guidelines)

How to Get Your First 10 Google Reviews (Without Breaking Guidelines)

The catch-22 of Google Business Profiles: you need reviews to get customers, but you need customers to get reviews. New businesses often feel stuck. Here's the ethical roadmap to your first 10 reviews.

First: What NOT to Do

Before we cover what works, let's be clear about what will get you banned:

  • Never pay for reviews. Google's algorithm detects suspicious patterns, and paid reviews can trigger permanent suspension
  • Don't ask for "5-star" reviews specifically. Google's guidelines prohibit requesting positive reviews—ask for honest feedback instead
  • Avoid review stations at your place of business. This violates Google's terms of service

The 30-Day Plan to 10 Reviews

Week 1: The Foundation

  • Create your review link (go to your GBP → "Ask for reviews")
  • Create a QR code pointing to your review link
  • Add the QR code to receipts, invoices, and business cards

Week 2: The Personal Outreach

Email your last 10 customers with a simple template:

"Hi [Name], thank you for choosing [business]. We're always looking to improve. Would you mind sharing your experience on Google? It helps others find us and helps us serve you better. Here's the link: [your review link]"

Week 3: The Timing Strategy

Train your staff to ask for reviews at the peak customer experience moment:

  • After a successful job completion
  • When a customer compliments your work
  • Following a positive interaction or resolution

Week 4: The Follow-Up

Send a text message 48 hours after service:

"Thanks again for choosing us! If you have 30 seconds, we'd love your feedback on Google: [link]"

The Response Protocol

When reviews come in, respond to every single one within 24 hours. This signals to Google (and future customers) that you're actively engaged.

Expected Results

Using this approach, our clients average an 8-12% response rate. Email 50 past customers, and you should earn 5-6 reviews. Combined with new customer requests, hitting 10 reviews in 30 days is entirely realistic.
